C10 / Gen 1
The mix grade C10 (also labelled Gen 1 in some schemes) corresponds to a compressive strength around 10 N/mm² at 28 days. It is positioned as an entry-level structural concrete for non-load-bearing works, or where reinforcement is minimal or absent. It is commonly used in groundworks, drainage, blinding and mass fills for housing developments and light commercial work.
Technical details
- Strength: ~10 N/mm² after standard cure (28 days) – adequate for low loading applications
- Mix proportions tend to have higher aggregate content and lower cement than higher grades – so economical. For example, typical values show that for C25/30, cement content may be ~350 kg/m³ etc
- The water-cement ratio is relatively higher (i.e., more water for workability) but still controlled to meet durability and setting requirements.
- Suitable for non-aggressive environments; if ground conditions are aggressive (chlorides, sulfates), a higher grade or special admixtures may be required.

Typical applications & key benefits
Typical applications
- Pad foundations or small isolated footings in domestic settings
- Mass concrete fill under slabs or ground floors when high strength not needed
- Blinding layers beneath reinforced slabs or foundations
- Drainage trenches, trench back-fill, non-structural walls
- Isolation fill where subsequent reinforcement will carry most structural load
Key benefits
- Cost-effective solution for low strength requirements
- Faster delivery and placement given lower specification
- Lighter reinforcement (or none) often needed compared with higher grades
- Simplifies logistics for bulk fills or large volumes
Ordering & delivery advice
When placing your order, include: dimensions of pad or fill, ground condition (aggressive or non-aggressive), whether reinforcement is present, access for pump or crane, placement method (direct discharge or pumped). Note that even though strength requirement is modest, good curing is still essential for durability and to avoid early cracking.
